SkyBlock players woke up today to discover that one of the most controversial and unmistakably dystopian perks in recent memory had officially gone live. The perk, Public Surveillance, was introduced under the authority of the newly elected Minister Candypat. Its directive was simple: players must check in with a Surveillance Goon on the map every 30 minutes, or face an immediate 10% stat debuff.
This perk offered a uniquely intrusive gameplay loop, in which you had to drop everything you were doing twice per hour to avoid losing 10% of their stats. In practice, it gave everyday play into a constant “drop what you’re doing” requirement: dungeons, Kuudra, Slayers, even simple farming sessions would get disrupted if your timer lined up badly.
This 10% debuff applied to every stat, even ones normally exempt from this type of blanket boost, such as Pristine, Breaking Power, Magic Find, and all the Fortune stats. This would significantly impact people’s gameplay, causing downtime and the loss of lobbies as players would have to switch from their current lobby to the hub, losing their progress. This would especially affect gemstone mining, as miners were stuck between a rock and a hard place. Either accept a large cut in profits as Mining Speed, Mining Fortune, and Pristine was gets by 10%, or lose your lobby every 30 minutes and have downtime. This problem was made even more serious by the fact that there was an upcoming mining fiesta.
The Skyblock Community quickly turned toxic in light of this perk. Despite the fact Aura’s mayorship had and currently still brings unforeseen levels of stat boosts to Skyblock, the response to Candypat’s perk was overwhelmingly negative. The Hypixel Skyblock subreddit was especially emblematic of this, demonstrated by a comment that stated, “Someone should be a candidate with the sole perk of perma jailing [Candypat] next week,” getting 178 upvotes, as well as a sea of remarks claiming that they were unsubscribing from his channel.
The funny virtual block game quickly turned serious, as people sent death threats and doxxed Candypat over this, according to Youtuber MashClash and other reputable figures in the community. Other players started unsubscribing en-masse and spreading derogatory remarks about Candypat both in-game and online.
To gain a better view of what was happening from the ground, SkyblockElections sent their top reporter to the centerpiece of this entire event: Hub 1. He partied OakSee, a player speaking the following statement, “make sure you are UNSUBBED from FRAUDYPAT,” to try to ask them for a reason why. After having to convince OakSee that they were not a scammer, OakSee simply replied with “-10% stat was stinky.” OakSee would later go on to state that at the end of the day it was just a game and nothing would ever come close to justifying the doxing and death threats Candypat received, and that the community needed to genuinely check itself. Other negative comments found online and in-game from players ranged from “Can we start the great Candypat&Vidd unsubscribing of 2025 now” to “PUT HIM IN JAIL” to the ever eloquent, “F*ck this guy”
Returning to the newly inaugurated minister, after his personal information was leaked, Candypat addressed the situation in a community post on his YouTube channel. In the post, he explained that “Every single perk so far has been only positive and with a list of negative perks, it was only a matter of time before someone choose the negative perk …I thought it would be pretty goofy for the time being.”
Evidently, the backlash was too severe, and merely a few hours after the perk went live it was quietly taken down and replaced with Mythological Ritual. We hope that the Skyblock Community can learn from this experience and not doxx people over a perk in a block game.
With Aura’s seemingly indefinite mayorship having no end in sight, SkyblockElections will keep you informed on the current events unfolding.
